Piece #5

This week I decided to focus on the influence of the media through television. I wanted to portray the dominance of advertisements on television and how they make watching TV merely an exposure to advertisements rather than a form of entertainment. I originally began with a repetition of televisions CitraSolv-ed and then I added in images of product advertisements behind the televisions. When I completed this the advertisements were over-powering the images of the televisions. After the critique I was advised to either add another layer of a specific subject on top of the collage or reconfigure the collage in an interesting way. I decided to cut the collage into strips and create another structure in between the strips of the collage. I chose an image of a girl hiding her face with a newspaper draped over her head. I thought this image was evocative because she is hiding from the abundance of media exposre. I repeated this image to balance out the repetition of advertisements. I am much happier with the work as a final product than I was with just the collage I began with. I like the way I incorporated design structures to create repetition, rhythm, and balance in the work.

  1. I like the idea but i can hardly see the actual tvs. it's really busy which can be good since your portaying adverstisment yet its kind of hard to understand whats really going on in the piece. I do like how you went back into the piece and drew into it that was a nice touch.

  2. I like this piece but i would like to see more emphasis on the TV's. The chaos and calamity of it is great because that is what advertisements these days are made of! I enjoy this use of mixed media and literal "mixed media."

  3. I think this piece was one of your strongest so far. This is because you really explored the different ways to use media in the project, which makes it really interesting to look at. The only think that you could have added more empasis on the subject of the piece to really help relate your message to the viewer. But overall, good job :)

  4. I really like what you chose to do with your piece. Its great because I can still see the advertisements in the background but they aren't overpowering the girl. I can definitely tell that the girl is upset with the newspaper in front of her face which also tells me that the media is effecting her. great job!

  5. Hey Mary. I think that you did a good job but, what you really need to work on is making the t.v.s pop out of the picture. I also think that it's a little too busy all around. You did a good job with the girl's reaction. In all, you did well.

  6. You really changed it a lot from the critique we did on this piece. You covered up the tv's quite a bit. Perhaps you could make them stand out more. I do like the repitition through ou the piece and I think the concept is stronger than some of the pieces you have done previously.

  7. Mary- this is much stronger since you reworked it. My suggestion is to work back into the figure with a dark marker and redraw shapes and define edges so that the figure has even greater contrast. Focus on your drawing skills as you do this so that your emphasis remains on the mark-making.
