Piece #6

For my sixth concentration piece I wanted to focus on the violence in the media. My idea was to portray all the different ways consumers view violence in their daily lives and show that influence on an observer. I incorporated images of war, violence, domestic violence in pop culture, and violence depicted in music in the background and worked a graphite and charcoal portrait on top of that. I am happy with this composition because I think it is very engaging and the rhythm of it leads the eye around the whole picture plane. I also think there is nice contrast in this piece through warm and cool colors and also between black and white and the vibrant colors. Overall I am happy with this piece and excited that my concentration is half-way done at this point.

  1. I love how you fixed the back of the kids head it looks a loy better. you might want to difine the background a little more to make it more evident that hes watching tv.

  2. Mary, this piece is solid! I really like the values of the boy's head--it's your best "value-job" yet. The citra-solv images are interesting..especially the dress-punching bag and twisted gun. The gun looks a little bit odd right now because the way you shaded it makes it look a little like it's sticking the the boy's head...haha..I think you could separate it more. I also feel like this topic is a little vague--and I like where your going in concentration #7 because it is more specific and less portrayal of categories of media. Overall grrrreat job!

  3. Mary, I love this composition. The colors and values really work and I like what you've done with the boy since the critique. For some reason it looks like his right ear is a little off, but other than that you did a great job! I also think that you made it pretty clear that you are focusing on the idea of violence in the media with this piece. I especially like how the background images blend together to give it a somewhat unreal mood.
    awesome, keep it up!

  4. Mary,
this piece is the best one yet! I really enjoyed the way that you developed this piece through the different layers. I also like the effect of having the subject of the paining really reflect the ideas behind the piece. In other words, i really liked the way you had the boy sitting (not facing the viewer) to really bring the attention to the idea of the effect violence in the media has on people. My suggestion would be to add more detail and values to the subject in order to really "wow" the viewer. Overall, good work!

  5. mary this piece is really good! I can really see that the kid is being effected by the violence in media! something you might want to do is make some small violent features stand out a bit more because its a little hard to tell what exactly the violence is besides the gun, but other than that it looks really good!

  6. Mary - good work on this piece. I still think the gun on the boys head needs to be developed with a greater contrast than the head so that it is clear what is happining in the piece. Otherwise, the content of the artwork is a bit lost.
