This piece is successful because of the loose, expressive quality of your lines, and the content associated with the subject. The idea of hands reaching up is compelling because it makes you think of an act of supplication, or desperation. You could develop more contrast in the background to make the hands really pop. Great job!
Mary, I really anjoy this piece. The hands show expression and emotion and that is hard to do without a face. I like the way you positioned the hands enables us to feel the gravity and the "pulling down" affect that the hands are feeling.
