Concentration #1- Critique Response
For my first concentration piece in my focus on media I am portraying the idea of body image. I first assembled a background for my work out of images of women in fashion and advertisements torn from magazine and collaged together. Then on top of the collage I drew a charcoal drawing of a girl looking insecure and uncomfortable. I wanted the portrait of the girl to express the uneasiness she feels when she sees the images portrayed in magazines and advertisements that try to dictate how she should look or act. I tried to make the expression of the portrait as accurate as I could in order to display the message of body image I am trying to present in this work.
After having a critique in class I received a few suggestions I worked into my piece. My classmates thought the collage/portrait combination was a successful idea and composition and encouraged me to keep working with that idea. I was also encouraged to make the portrait as uncomfortable and insecure as I could in order to emphasize the message. I took these criticisms into account when finishing my piece. As my first concentration piece I think this is a good start to my investigation of the influence of the media.

Mary, I really like this concentration piece and I think you have a really good idea for your overall concentration. The layering of media is taking a risk and it turned out really well. I like how the collage blends into the charcoal drawing and the white lines draw your eye to the insecure girl's face. Good Job!
ReplyDeleteI think your concentration idea is original and interesting, and it definitely reflects your personal style. I like the contrast between the black and white "insecure" girl and the colorful "self-assured" people in the background. The piece also has a good composition. The only thing I would do is to go back into the portrait with white charcoal or something and make the lights in the face pop. Otherwise, great job. :D
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteYOu did a nice job finishing the project and I think the style in which you drew it is effective for this piece. I think what I am even more interested in seeing is how you are going to push the concept of media/body image/portrait. What it is about the media that you want to focus on? What is bad? What most affects young women? If you can look at it from the perspective of the media- does that change your content? In other words, instead of drawing a picture of a girl would you instead show these beautiful models as sinister, lurking creatures as part of your concentration? Just a thought. I'm pleased with your overall progress so far. I look forward to seeing how your concentration will evolve!
