Piece 3
My third piece in my concentration is a work portraying the way the media promotes alcohol use. I wanted to show that the media glamorizes the idea of alcohol, making it seem as if alcohol is a pathway to being accepted, fun, and is a beneficial hobby. However, as many teenagers and young adults are targeted by these false messages the media's influence can actually lead to the exact opposite outcome. So for my piece I wanted to represent this issue by contrasting the bottle in the foreground with the sick girl in the background to contrast what the media is selling versus the real results of the product. I began this work as a watercolor pencil drawing but after critique I was encouraged to add layers of imagery and other medias on top of my drawing. I did so by adding CitraSolved images and layering with more watercolor pencil and Sharpie pen. I think by work incorporates the principles of movement, contrast, and balance in the composition and the mark-making of the piece. I feel that this piece is a good representation of my message through mark-making and design.

I think that this piece was one of your strongest so far. I like how you incorporated the media in this picture with the citrasolve transfers on the bottle. I also think that the way you emphasized the alcohol in the piece clearly communicated your message (for your concentration) to the viewer. My only suggestion would be to work on the floor a little more and make it little more detailed, but overall good job :)
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely my favorite of all of your concentration pieces so far. Your message about the harmful effects of the media is so clear- especially with the recently added citrasolve images of advertisements on top of the bottle. I also really like your perpective in this piece. The first thing you see is the large bottle up close and the images glamorizing drinking, and then the girl catches your eye and shows you the negative and harmful side of alcohol. Also, I love your mark making. It seems like you are becoming bolder, trying new things, and taking risks. The Sharpie added alot to the work! You definitely have your own personal style. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI really like this piece. It is very different from your first too and I like the direction that you took and how you took chances with the composition. I like the foreground and the background and how bold it was. The bottle is great you really got your point across and improved it with the comments made during the critic. Great job overall!
ReplyDeleteMary- Nice job. You are taking some obvious risks in the way that you are mark-making and unifying your imagery. I would be careful that your marks do not distract from the transfers or overpower them so the the message is lost. I think the layering of imagery is to your benefit for this particular concentration and I look forward to see how you will problem-solve future images. My one suggestons is to tie-in your interest in architecture by creating interesting spaces that enahnce the message you are trying to show. Otherwise, I think you are off to a strong start!
