Piece #2
For my second concentration piece I decided to focus on the message of vanity the media projects onto society. I wanted to portray the emphasis the media puts on outer beauty, vanity, and the image of perfection. I took a similar approach as my last piece by making a collage of images from magazines showing up close, models with a lot of make-up and retouching. Then on top of the collage I drew a portrait of a girl influenced by those messages on tracing paper. I wanted the portrait to represent the influence of the messages of beauty. After the critique in class I decided to emphasize the make-up of the girl and make her look at superficial as possible. I hope my piece generates a reaction from the viewer in order to mirror the strong influence the media has over society.

Hey Mary, I like your idea but I think that your second concentration is very similar looking to your first concentration. I like the magazine pictures that you put behind the see through paper. It looks really interesting. I would also add a lot more makeup on the girl (maybe even real makeup). Overall, good job :)
ReplyDeleteMary, this is a solid 2nd piece. I like how you used tracing paper, that makes me happy. I do think you could create a little more value in the face and make the makeup totally pop out more. Other than that, I think your topic is really cool! Looking forward to the alcohol one. haha.
ReplyDeleteYour idea of giving the picture a lack of color to emphasize on media is great! It really makes the eyes and women in the background stand out. Great job "little lamb"
ReplyDeleteMary- I like the idea above about adding real make-up to this piece. Now that we have a photo of it, you ought to try that and see how it works! I also agree that it is similar to your first piece, which is fine but I think you need to start pushing to how a girl interprets what the media is projecting and how it can influence decisions (at least I think this is what you are going for?). I also would like to see you consider how you could incorporate more design structures into your work to help emphsize your overall idea. When you work back into this piece, consider how you can use value as shape rather than lines to define shaded areas. I think this will help make your image more believable. Good work and I am anxious to see what you produce next!
ReplyDeleteMary, I really like your ideas! The tracing paper over the magazine collage gives a very clear statement of what your concentration is about. I like your lines and overall it's a very interesting piece!
